What the assists table tells you

An assist is credited to the player whose final pass leads directly to a goal. It depends on a team mate finishing the chance, so a creator can have a modest total through no fault of their own.

Assists are rarer than goals and move in small steps, so the table is full of ties and one match can change the order. The per 90 column helps compare wingers and midfielders who have had different amounts of game time.

Key passes and expected assists give a wider view of chance creation, because they count passes that led to shots whether or not the shot went in. Both have their own pages here.
