What the blocked shots table tells you

A blocked shot is when a player puts their body in the way of an attempt and stops it reaching the goal. It is one of the few defensive actions that clearly helps in the moment.

Centre backs and defensive midfielders lead because they stand in the way of central shots. Sides that spend long spells defending record more, so a high count can also say something about how often a team is under pressure.

Blocks are small numbers over a few matches, so the order shifts quickly early in a season.
