What the tackles table tells you
Tackles counts the times a player has challenged an opponent and won the ball. It is a work rate figure: it rewards players who step in and take possession rather than those who sit and screen.
High totals usually belong to defensive midfielders and full backs, who face runners more often than centre backs, whose job is often to cut out the pass before a tackle is needed. A lower count does not make a weaker defender.
Teams that spend more time without the ball make more tackles, so context matters. The per 90 column evens out playing time.
